Hard Art is Sometimes Soft @ The Frank

Yesterday I stopped by to see new member of Peninsula Women's Caucus for Art Tara de la Garza's curated exhibit "Hard Art is Sometimes Soft" at The Frank Gallery in Redwood City.  Again we have another member who has stepped outside the box and curated a must see!

The exhibit was quite interesting and I found the larger pieces with the mirrors attached intriguing asking the question "what do we see or need to see in life".  I do think my favorite was the ball of fabric that was used as a measurement to calculate the artist daughters movements. Personally, for me my works always have a strong personal tie and I liked very much the connection between mother and child.

 

The soft pink sculpture was also a favorite.  This sculpture seemed to parallel with my personal life right now.  If the oxygen is cut off life ends but with so little oxygen being pushed into the object it was full and dynamic, the soft pink color kept it from being overwhelming and gave a quiet glow that was soothing.

This is one of three 4 x 6 textile cards I created for the International Women's Caucus for Art fund raiser. The work will be displayed at the United Nations this fall along with many others that have been created to financially underwrite expenses for our traveling exhibits. I believe the cards will be sold after they have traveled through 2016 for 25.00.

                                            "Boundaries"

This is the Peninsula WCA last exhibit of the season.  My exhibiting artwork is "Caution". The work is a recreation of the caution signs that were for many years on California Highways the 5 and 405.  My concern when I first saw the sign was that it was confusing to immigrants coming in from the Pacific Ocean. Who's boundary was it or was it as 
many immigrants saw a safe place to cross.  Many lives were lost due to these signs.

The exhibit location is Coastal Art League, HMB August 21, 2015 - September 20, 2015
hours are Wednesday through Sunday 12-5. Opening  reception August 22, 2015 5-7.

Quilting Arts Magazine June/July Issue

My fiber art work "Upward and Onward" 65h x 35w is featured in the June/July issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.  The article featured is about SAQA Celebrating Silver exhibit of which I was chosen to create an art work for this momentous celebration of their 25th Anniversary!


The textile is for sale at $1,900.00. This work would look great as a center piece of a room or would make a great gift to donate to a hospital or any type of center that has lots of people walking by as this is definitely a spirit lifter.

"2 X" Exhibit

Women's Caucus for Art has a new exhibit at Twin Pines Gallery, Belmont California.
This is a interesting exhibit in that the artist are hanging two pieces of art work next to each other that have either a similarity, story or might be derived from the same inspiration.

My work "Terrain" and one of my original designed opera purses were created using my award winning design "Images".  Seems so long ago that I created "Images" from looking at aerial views of the Bay Area of Northern California. Below is a picture of my work hanging in the gallery.

My artwork  "Swimming Upstream, small" was selected for the “Transforming Community: Disability, Diversity and Access”, Petra Kuppers Juror, for the WCA exhibition at the Westbeth Gallery in New York for February 2015. The exhibit coincides with Women's Caucus for Arts National Conference in New York City.

2015 NICHE Award Winner!

Just got back from Washington DC where I received the 2015 Niche Award in the fiber art quilt category at the American Made Show.  Loved my first visit to Washington DC and it was top off when I received the award.  The Niche Award is about attaining technical ability, creating unique artwork that is thoughtful and original.

2015 President Peninsula Women's Caucus for Art

The position was empty and I volunteered!  I have been pondering this position as our Chapter always seems to have a problem getting members to volunteer for any board position.

Our First meeting this year is Saturday January 24, 2015 at Peninsula Museum of Art, Burlingame, California. We will meet in the Library which is lovely at 11:30.  Ellen Lee will give our first Artist Presentation and we will meet after the meeting at a local resturant/coffee shop to continue the art conversation.  I am planning many outings this year and I also have instituted the Artist Presentation so we might learn about the art our members create. Planning this year my thoughts were about Virginia Woolfe, I have also created a new work making Virginia a main character in the art work. She had the thought that a woman needs a room of her own.  I interpret that thought meaning she needs to realize her importance and I want the women to know just how important they and the art they create.

Tea service will be available at the meeting! Looking forward to meeting you.
